The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is not to be missed when in Venice!
The word "Guggenheim" all around the world stands for contemporary lifestyle, modern design, and artistic avant-garde. What you may not know is that Peggy Guggenheim, Solomon Guggenheim's niece, lived in a spectacular palace on the Grand Canal in Venice for thirty years! Shortly after she moved in, this iconic woman, exceptional art-lover and patron opened the doors of her palatial home once a week for everybody in the city to see her collection's masterpieces. Otherwise, she thought, how could normal people ever have the chance to admire those many cubism, expressionism and surrealism masterpieces?
This splendid modern art museum on the Grand Canal with the rich legacy Peggy Guggenheim left us exhibits her personal collection of art, together with other pieces on loan or donated by other patrons. Her collection includes the works of great avant-garde artists of the 20th century including Jean Arp, Umberto Boccioni, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Germaine Richier, Gino Severini, Clyfford Still, Emilio Vedova, as well as Jackson Pollock whom she discovered in America and many other artists.
To visit the Guggenheim Museums in New York or Bilbao, both also part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, surely is an experience not to be missed, but to walk freely among stunning pieces of art under the same roof where Peggy Guggenheim lived and to breathe the fresh air of a beautiful day in her garden on the Grand Canal in Venice is something truly unique, something you definitely can't wait to tell your friends about. You can almost feel her presence hanging around the rooms and the courtyards, enjoying the same warm sun that is kissing your skin and sitting on her old stone throne surrounded by her beloved dogs!
And what's better than bringing home some cool memories from this awesome visit?
